Hurricane Helene made landfall in late September 2024, causing widespread catastrophic damage throughout the Southeastern US, especially in Western North Carolina. Almost immediately, misinformation and disinformation was being spread on social, amplified by President Trump and other prominent Republicans, about the federal assistance available to survivors of the hurricane and the federal government’s response writ large.

Rebutting this misinformation required a all-hands-on-deck response, including point-by-point rebuttals from the White House Twitter account (linked below), daily updates on the amount and types of aid delivered by federal personnel, and step-by-step assistance in applying for aid texted directly to survivors’ phones and targeted to the states affected by Helene.
